The need for an immunoassay analyzer

Located in La Garenne-Colombes, northwest of Paris, the Lambert Clinic is a healthcare establishment affiliated with the Ramsay Générale de Santé Group.

In 2013, the Lambert Clinic’s trusted medical analysis laboratory BioParisOuest relocated to Levallois (Biogroup-LCD), resulting in the Clinic’s lab becoming a peripheral site. The ED Reception Service (SAU) continued to send its lab orders to the technical platform but after opening its Emergency Department (ED) in 2019, streamlining SAU activities became a priority.

After discussing the potential benefits of reducing the result wait time with the team, the Biogroup-LCD laboratory at the Lambert Clinic installed an AQT90 FLEX immunoassay analyzer in collaboration with the ED.

Choosing an analyzer

The Clinic’s pharmacist and medical biologist, Béatrice Terrasse, explained the various factors that contributed to their decision including “connectivity to the MPL validation station… being able to test troponin T and D-dimer on the same EDTA tube and on whole blood [1, 2]” as well as meeting COFRAC accreditation requirements [3].

The choice of parameters was made in collaboration with ED physicians.

Installing and using the AQT90 FLEX analyzer in the ED laboratory

Radiometer supported the Clinic through the implementation process, particularly with regard to qualification, validating methods, training and authorizing all laboratory staff.

Benefits of the AQT90 FLEX analyzer on patient care in the ED

As seen in other studies [5, 6], use of the AQT90 FLEX was associated with shorter wait times for patient results and improved patient flow. Consequently, patients could be referred to the right department and where appropriate, returned home, more swiftly than before.

Installing the AQT90 FLEX analyzer also changed practices and contributed to reducing teams' stress, as explained by Dr. Ohana: “In the ED, we need things quickly! We cannot afford to wait for a courier because a heart attack does not wait.”

Lastly, the establishment of a clinical lab contract between the laboratory and the ED department facilitated the strengthening of relations between these two services.

On average, we were able to save 1.5 hours on the Time-To-Result (TTR) [4] with the use of AQT90 FLEX which could lead to a great improvement in the length of stay for patients in the ED of the Lambert Clinic.
