Hospital Jean Bernard – video transcript

Narrator

In an emergency, every second counts. And to deliver best practice patient care, clinicians need fast access to reliable results on critical parameters. Traditionally, the laboratory provides health care professionals with this vital data. But when a life is in danger, blood samples aren’t taken to the laboratory; instead, the laboratory comes to the department. It’s known as point-of-care testing.

Dr. Christian Jakubowski, ICU doctor

When a patient’s life is in danger, we need to make treatment decisions quickly based on reliable clinical and paraclinical data. Thanks to point-of-care testing, patient interviews (if possible), and of course, clinical examinations, we can promptly make informed decisions. Point-of-care testing dramatically improves turnaround time for laboratory results. And as we know, the speed at which treatment decisions are made affects a patient’s prognosis.

In emergency departments, blood gases are some of the most frequently prescribed biological tests. They provide vital information, such as a patient’s acid-base balance. But because permanent gas exchanges occur within samples, blood gas tests are time sensitive. This means that in order to avoid incorrect results, samples should be analyzed as quickly as possible.

Dr. Hervé Bisau, Lab Medical Director

Our multi-site laboratory includes six production sites where we work with six health care centers and four medical-surgical clinics. Some of our laboratory partners—including the AHNAC group—had some aging equipment, mainly blood gas analyzers, in need of replacement. Similarly, we had aging equipment in some hospitals, ICUs and maternity departments. In total, we replaced almost twenty analyzers.

Point-of-care testing is performed at the patient’s bedside, mainly in critical care units such as maternity wards, emergency departments, intensive care units, etc. Point-of-care blood gas analyzers are simple devices that can be used by a range of professionals, including caregivers without a specialization in biology or testing. Results can be obtained quickly. However, this equipment must be installed and checked, and it’s the laboratory’s responsibility to ensure proper operation and reliable results.

Dr. Nathalie Colard, Medical Biologist

Our needs demanded a uniform pool of devices that came with a quick, user-friendly solution. We needed analyzers with vital prognosis panels for our emergency department, the ICU, the pulmonology ward, and the maternity ward.

We needed a robust, standalone solution to manage quality controls and calibrations. As such, we introduced the AQURE middleware POC IT solution. It offers us remote access and control of the system to support our biologists and service engineers in need, as well as the ability to monitor devices remotely.

We had to train several hundred nurses on the 18 newly installed analyzers, across eight health care centers. This would not have been possible without the help of Radiometer’s service engineers and the solutions with which they provided us.

Dr. Adeline Maitte, Medical Biologist

Radiometer offers expert advice and solid support during the process of obtaining accreditation. In the field, Radiometer’s application specialists are of great assistance for issues relating to reproducibility and how to program devices for correlations. They provide an array of useful support, especially for large implementations.

Radiometer devices are connected to the cloud and can be operated remotely. Troubleshooting can also be conducted remotely, reducing any related travel to the care departments. This is particularly useful for devices located at the point of care which for us, could be as far as 30 kilometers from our main site. This also increases device uptime, especially for users, in quite a transparent way. We can relaunch a calibration or do things of that nature so as to enable greater device availability.

Radiometer offers customers an annual account review and report. Data is drawn from the cloud to analyze activity and analyzer downtime, and to construct an action plan ensuring continuous improvements and the development the reciprocal relationship.

Narrator

In short, the implementation of point-of-care testing by expert companies such as Radiometer has revolutionized practice, both in health care departments and in laboratories. These technical and organizational advances enable faster patient care, and improved quality of care.

I would like to thank the SHAB teams and Radiometer. Until we meet again.
